The Inconvenience of Training

This week I have not felt like working out – it’s cold, I’m tired, and it feels like a chore. Then I remembered – IT IS! You’re not always going to want to workout just like you’re not always going to want to make you bed, but you’ll feel better once you do! In fact, you probably won’t want to more often than you will. This is nothing unique to you, so don’t feel special and don’t feel good about using it as an excuse. I’ve been training/working in gyms for 15 years and I still don’t always want to workout, but I do. So next time you don’t want to workout, convince yourself to go to the gym and do 1 compound movement (press, squat, or deadlift), and I guarantee you’ll be happy you did. Training isn’t about trying to accomplish everything on a singular day. If you take this approach you’ll end up injured and/or burned out. To make exercise a habit, you have to be willing to zoom out and see the big picture. Know when to do a little and know when to do a lot. Also, it’s important to accept that:

  • You’re going to have bad days
  • You’re going to feel weaker sometimes
  • Life’s about doing things you don’t want to do

The goal is to stack one brick per day until you’ve built a wall. And when the wall is built you start to chip away at it and find its weakness, and then built it stronger.

*Repeat this for the next 50 years for optimal results.
